How to Dress for A Night at The Casino

How to Dress for A Night at The Casino

If you are planning to visit a brick-and-mortar casino for the first time, you might be confused about how to dress for casino visits. Some will watch casino-themed movies to try to figure out the dress-code but this is not really the right way. Fun fact: the costume budget for the 1995 movie “Casino” with Sharon Stone and Robert de Niro stretched to 1 million dollars. But don’t worry, you won’t have to try to mimic that. What to wear at the casino will depend on the venue itself.

In this article, we will explain to you how to figure out a certain casino’s dress-code and what the common options are. Péter Deli, Hungarian iGaming expert has given us some guidelines for the Hungarian and international casino dress-code. You can read more about Péter here.

How to Research the Venue

There is no universal dress-code in casinos. Of course, there are a few general ideas such as Europeans are more formal than Americans and evening casino visits are more formal than daytime ones – to make sure you won’t go wrong you will have to find out the dress-code of the venue you are about to visit.

Don’t have the means or the time to shop for a new formal attire? Visit an online casino in Hungary. You can play your favourite table game or buy a popular kaparós sorsjegy online in many casinos that are listed on this page.

Contact the Casino

This sounds obvious, but many don’t bother to contact the casino only to end up being turned away from the entrance for not having appropriate shoes or a collared shirt. If you can’t find the dress-code information clearly stated on the casino’s website, call them or send them a Facebook message or simply tweet them. For example, the website of Las Vegas casinos in Budapest, clearly states that they have no dress code, however, we have come across other casino websites that don’t mention dress-code.

Find Pictures of the Casino

You can do this from the casino’s website’s gallery section. Here, staged or not, you will find pictures of what players are wearing and hence what the casino expects you to wear. If there is no gallery or they show the casino rooms without people, you can try to look for pictures in Google or Tripadvisor reviews.

Research the Place

Casinos that are part of hotel complexes, just like most of the venues in Las Vegas, should give you an idea of their image based on how expensive or exclusive they are. You will find casino hotels that sell rooms for $50 a night and have buffet restaurants or a McDonald’s inside them while some will charge $500 and upwards for a room and feature a Michelin-starred restaurant. The more exclusive the place seems the more likely it is that they will have a strict dress code.

How to Plan your Outfit

Ok, so you have figured out the dress-code. Now let see the different dress-code definitions:

  • White tie: this is the most formal of all dress-codes. For women, this means a long evening gown, high-heeled shoes, jewellery and other special accessories like gloves or tiaras. Men will need a white bow tie, a white waistcoat, a black jacket with matching trousers, black leather shoes and cufflinks.
  • Black tie: women should wear long evening dresses with smart shoes while men should don a white dress shirt, a black bow tie, a waistcoat, a black dinner jacket and black leather shoes.
  • Semi-formal: women can wear short or long cocktail dresses or a business suit (including pants suit) and men need to prepare with a dark business suit, button-down shirt, tie and dark leather shoes.
  • Casual: this means that you are at liberty of choosing your outfit, however, the following should always be avoided: flip flops, shorts, baseball hats, worn out-looking or torn clothes, unclean clothes and swimwear.

Conclusion

You should always find out before visiting the casino what dress-code they require. It is a good idea to take backup casino clothes with you if you are not sure but being under or overdressed can be very embarrassing and you might even be denied entry.
